Ava DuVernay's birth occurred on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise when she was a little girl. Aunt Denise worked the night shifts as a nursing assistant, so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt recommended her to DuVernay. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism when she was just an elementary school student. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the house and examining the garbage from one of the jury. Her work left her dissatisfied by journalism and she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay was hired right out of college as a junior publicist at the studio that was small. In this role, she launched her own public relations company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
